MORTALLY<O>
BANKRUPT
is a game about bankrupt mortals with nothing left but talent, personality, passion, and high fashion. It’s also about the invasive Horrors whose transceiver-tendrils will groom them into hollow, photoshopped Reality Stars. We’ll watch their symbiotic desperation destroy our humanity through the episodes of a Reality Show with cinematics that burn eyes and special fx that hack physics.

Do you have 3-5 players ready to play a game for 2 hours? Are you streaming this game or have some other kind of audience ready? Then begin. Which player is the Scion of Tendrils; who will hear the Quantum Noise; what havoc will your Tendrils wreak? All other players, become the Voices of the Reality Stars. What personalities will you give a voice to? What cinematics will you create? What will you make of a life that has crushed you, and an eldritch gaze that objectifies you?

This game conveys it's rules through tooltips like E
Well done! You'll need 1 Reality Show Sheet overall, 1 Neighborhood Sheet overall, and 1 Reality Star Sheet for each reality star.

Intro! E
In the Intro, the Scion raptures the Reality Stars into the Episode.

You are the Scion of Tendrils, responsible for creating the Reality Show. Descend upon your Reality Stars in their moment of greatest weakness. Offer them a weird, mystical way to enter the Episode. The way you rapture them will set the dial on how obvious the façade of the Reality Show is to them.

The Stars pick the kind of episode they're going to put on. Ask them for the Reason why they chose this Episode. The Voices use Recap Questions to keep the game fresh and focused in the audience's minds. After you've done that, start the Episode.
Gaze! E
After your first Episode, you Recap for the audience. In the Intro, look over your Recap Questions. If you've answered one through the events of a previous Episode, reveal to the Audience how it got resolved. If the question has been partially answered, clear 1 Gaze. If the question has been completely answered, clear 2 gaze and delete it.
You're out of Gaze. Recap to clear your Gaze.
Recap Questions! E
After you answer your Recap Questions, each cast member asks one more. Don't answer these questions now. They get answered through the narrative of the Show, and you recap the answers to remind the Audience what happened last time. When a Recap Question is posed, you may create a progress clock under it to track the progress of potential outcomes.
Recap Question:
Simple Complex Complicated Daunting
Frame Scenes Feel The Horrors Generate Chaos Create/Tick Clocks Use Abilities and Upgrades
Ordering Scenes! E
Most of the episode is taken up by framing scenes and following where they lead. As the Scion, you decide the order in which the cast frames scenes. When a scene feels done, you can say "Cut!" and the next person frames a scene.

At the beginning of every scene, ask separate cast members to describe the footage, sound, and graphics of this scene. Put it in a location. Ask which Stars are in this scene. Once you've heard everyone, judge the Cinematic Style of the scene to be: Flashy (Hyper-modern and Trendy), Dark (Moody and Harsh), or Distorted (Glitchy and Staticky).
Action Scenes! E
In an Action Scene, the Stars work toward getting their payoff, and the Scion of Tendrils works toward their dark purposes. If the Stars do what's outlined in their Episode Type, they Generate Chaos.

When asked for the effect level, or to decide how to assess the severity of the consequence, you assess effect level based on three factors: Quality (usefulness of resources), Scale (size, scope, numbers), and Potency (circumstances). Start from 2 ticks/Standard Effect. Each factor that the Star has an advantage in raises the effect by 1 (to great or extreme effect). If they have a disadvantage in that factor, lower the effect by 1 (to limited or zero effect).
Flashback Scenes! E
In Flashback Scenes, we pry into the Stars' histories.

You, as a Scion, can use Flashback Scenes to revise the past, and spend Ichor to create Tendrils rooted in the past.
Drama Scenes! E
In Drama Scenes, the Stars focus on each other. They have conversations in their Stars' voices, and create drama.

You too, can have in-character conversations with the Stars as your Tendrils.
Gaze! E
Gaze is the energy shared by the Scion and the Stars during the Reality Show. Once per Scene, when you succumb to the whispers of the Horrors, spend 1 gaze and gain an additional benefit based on the type of whisper.

Corruption: If you succumb, the world outside the Episode becomes altered. Pick a Special FX to use.

Invasion: If you succumb, the Horrors' question stands. If you can answer it in a Reality Show Confessional, clear 2 stress, even if you're at 6. If you can't answer it, it becomes a Recap Question.

Temptation: If you succumb, you must write a Reason of the Horror's design. It's a good and bad thing.
You're out of Gaze. This Episode ends now, and the Outro begins.
Tendril Slots! E
They're extensions of your will that can manifest on-screen as anything or anyone that serves you. Spend 1 Gaze to create an empty Tendril Slot. When you have to deliver a consequence, do so through your Tendrils. If your Tendril's form, qualities, or actions are undefined, it can appear as anything until those things are defined.

Before the Voices claim Payoff, clear Gaze by 1 for each Dark Purpose you accomplished. When they claim payoff, they spend all of the gaze remaining. 1 Gaze buys 2 Cash or 2 Fame. Spending 2 Gaze lets them write a new Special FX.

If someone's feeling particularly fancy, the Voices can make up other rewards, and the Scion can assign a Gaze cost.

Neighborhood! E
Your neighborhood is the place your game is set in. Over the course of a longer game, you might move around from neighborhood to neighborhood.
Neighborhood Name: See Name List:
Neighborhood Type: E
These are the aesthetics of your neighborhood. Each one has a list of scenic qualities to assign to your locations.
Fame: E

Downtime! E
Unlike the Episode, we do not play this part of the game in Scenes. Silence the Horrors' Terrible Whispers; you don't have any Gaze left to spend, anyway. Think about your Stars returning to a world that has betrayed them. Only this time, with the blessings and curses of Unreal entities.

Has your life changed, now that you're a Reality Star to an Audience of Unreality? Guide your downtime by asking questions about the Stars and what they're doing. Remember that Corruptions from the Episode affect the world, here and now.
Make Friends! E
When you go somewhere and wind up making a friend or a group of friends, pick a location, spend Fame equal to their quality and scale, and create a new person to add to the list of Folks.
Splurge! E
When you spend money, spend Cash equal to the Quality and Scale of the thing that you want, using the Ratings in Generate Chaos as guidance.

Clocks! E
In <O>, you use clocks to track the progress of fictional events. The more complex the situation, the more segments the clock should have.

A complex obstacle is a Complex clock. A more complicated obstacle is a 6-clock. A daunting obstacle is an Daunting clock.

Where are you? What brings this group together? This could be a hangout at a coffee house, a game night at someone's apartment, a holiday gathering, etc.

On your turn, you can ask a question from the list below, engage in an improvised conversation together, talk about the thing that gathers you here, or you can leave the gathering.

Group Activity! E

Scenic Qualities: E
When you create a new location, give it 3 scenic qualities. You're allowed to write-in up to two of them, but at least one has to come from this list below. If none of the qualities come from the list, this location counts as existing in a different neighborhood.
Locations! E
Your job as the Voice of the Neighborhood is to create new Locations and put them on-screen. If the Stars use something you say as a Reason for something, they can realize it just like a Reason, using its Meaning like the Control of a Reason.

If they don't accept the invitation, decrease the Meaning by 1, and change something about this Location.
